Review: Perhaps a snapshot of what Woodrow Wilson can be was taken from a pair of late-season games against playoff-bound teams in Greenbrier East and George Washington. The Flying Eagles dropped both those games by 3, losing the East (the second time the teams met in what was Covid-19 normal in 2020) 49-46 and George Washington 45-42. The 88 points represented 57.8 percent of the team’s points on the season.
Unfortunately the two ended in losses and Woodrow finished the season 1-7.
More importantly moving forward was the play of quarterback Maddex McMillen, who began to morph into being one of the area’s top signal callers by that point and really showed it over those two games. During that stretch McMillen was 24 of 35 passing for 536 yards and six touchdowns and one interception. Against GW he had a record 366 yards passing and four touchdowns. He rushed for 50 yards and three touchdowns against East. For the season McMillen threw for 1,401 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 204 yards and five scores.
It was a tough start to the season as the Flying Eagles fell to Greenbrier East, Bluefield and Parkersburg South in succession before a win at Preston.
Players to watch: Quarterback Maddex McMillen has morphed into one of the areas top signal callers after a record-setting junior season. And he has been a standout on the summer camp circuit this year. McMillen has some top talents in Keynan Cook and Elijah Redern to throw to as well. Coach Street Sarrett is high on your returning offensive linemen – Christian Burks, Bryant Hill Michael Miller and James Carter.
Players who will surprise: Running back Nate Grayton got a look early in the season and in he Flying Eagles victory against Preston the Sarrett also said Darmonte Mitchell would open some eyes this season
Statistical leaders 2020
Rush: Hezekyiah Creasy (79-482-1); Pass: Maddex McMillen 92-169-10-1,401-13 ; Receive: Jace Colucci 29-558-7)
After starting 2-0 in 2018, Woodrow hasn’t had a lot of success, but this year that looks to change, most notably because Maddex McMillen return as one of the area’s top quarterbacks and he has a lot in the arsenal when he wants to air it out. Top receiver Jace Colucci is graduated but look at the weapons McMillen has Keynan Cook (33-385-2), Elijah Redfern (17-263-3) and Ty’lai Kimble (12-155-1), who accounted for 64.6 percent of the team’s catches (62 of 96), 55.8 percent of the receiving yards (803 of 1,440) and 46.2 percent of the receiving touchdowns (6 of 13). McMillen, Cook and Redfern were teammates on the Woodrow Wilson state tournament basketball squad as well.
It’s no longer a stretch to see area teams pass for more yardage than they throw for and Woodrow is no stranger to that trend, as 54.9 percent of its yardage was through the air. But the season could hinge on whether or not the Eagles can amass a run game behind Nate Grayton and company. Sarrett has been high on the line he is returning and the Woodrow Wilson twitter account was one of the most prolific at posting their daily workout info, dubbing morning workout session the Breakfast Club.
One of the games to watch will be Oct. 1 when the Flying Eagles welcome Princeton, in what will be a matchup of two of the top quarterbacks in the area in McMillen and Princeton’s Grant Cochran.
Along with nine players who have starting experience on offense and 11 who have starting experience on defense, Woodrow Wilson also returns both its specialists, Connor Mollohan who is ascending up the kicker ratings nationally and Jackson Quatrone who will handle the punting chores.
