More basketball can never be seen as a bad thing.

And area basketball fans will have another high school basketball tournament to add to the schedule for the 2018-19 season.

The New River Community and Technical Foundation will host the inaugural New River CTC Shootout at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center on Jan. 2, 2019. Six regional basketball teams and two middle school teams are scheduled to compete in the first event.

“We’re giving many high school and middle school teams am opportunity to play in the convention center, an opportunity they may not have otherwise,” New River CTC Foundation Executive Director Michael Green said.

Greenbrier East, Greater Beckley, James Monroe, Pocahontas County, Shady Spring and Westside High Schools will compete along with Peterstown Middle and Shady Spring Middle are competing in the inaugural event.

“The tournament will be an enjoyable way for student, parents and school administrators to learn more about the New River CTC and our affordable tuition,” Green said,  “Many of our freshmen students decide to attend New River CTC in order to obtain their core classes prior to transferring to a four-year institution, This is a win-win situation for students and their parents.”

New River CTC offers more than 60 degree and certificate programs along with workforce training. Classes are offered in Beaver, Ghent, Lewisburg, Marlinton, Princeton and Summersville.

The college has transfer agreements in place with many area four-year institutions to make it easier for students to transfer.

All proceeds form the tournament will go toward funding scholarships for New River CTC students. The New River CTC Foundation awards over $100,000 in college scholarships each year.
